The Black Mermaids brand represents what it means to be bold, brave and resilient while embodying modern storytelling and honoring ancestral traditions.
In 2016, Julia Mallory had the lone goal of publishing a collection of poetry. The collection would come to be called Black Mermaids—its title poem detailing a reimagining of mermaids:
What if during the Transatlantic Slave Trade, kidnapped Africans aboard slave ships that attempted to flee or were thrown overboard in turn became Black mermaids upon entering the water?

Black Mermaids rise from destruction and recreate themselves.
Black Mermaids are guided by love and choose joy as an act of resistance.

In the summer of 2017, she released her first children’s book, Kareemah and the Black Mermaids in an effort to address both the demand for more portrayals of mermaids of color for younger audiences and the need for more children’s literature featuring ethnically and racially diverse main characters.
In 2018, her children's book BREATHE, about a child that meditates with his dad, was published.
Julia's latest book, Survivor's Guilt crystallizes her grief experience over a two year period after the death of her oldest son Julian in 2017.
