We are conditioned to downplay our emotions. To see their presence as a disadvantage. As Benji Hart said "feeling is not weakness."
Unacknowledged grief doesn't disappear - it merely morphs and becomes something else. We think if we don't say the "G" word, it will miss us and attach itself to some other so-called weaker soul.
What many of us never learned is that being emotionally well-rounded takes courage - to possess emotional range is for the brave. We can't avoid feeling, especially grief.
Sometimes we say we are numb which is the absence of feeling when we really mean that we can't feel what we think we should be feeling.
Grief is funny like that - the way the losses show up and shock us. The way what we thought would end us, gave us new life. What was supposed to be a little thing, hurt for what felt like forever.
These days I have so many more questions than I do answers but I know there is freedom in feeling. That we honor our full power when we can inhabit all that we are. Flesh and feelings.
We can't avoid grief and be free. I want to be free. How about you?
